Mosquitoes Get Attracted by Body Odor, Say Researchers

Are you tired of protecting your body from mosquitoes and finding it hard to keep them away from your body? If yes, then it is high time for you to pay attention to your body odor. A recent study has found that body odor of a person attract mosquitoes.

It might surprise you but according to the researchers, the microbes on the skin plays vital role in making mosquitoes attracted towards the body. The microbes on the skin emit certain smell of odor which is enough to attract mosquitoes.

The findings of the research have been published in the scientific journal PLoS One. The researchers are of the view that the findings of the research could prove helpful in devising malaria prevention techniques. The research was conducted by the researchers of Wageningen University of Netherlands.

For the research, the researchers conducted a small test over Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto mosquito, which is alleged of causing malaria in Africa. During the research, it was found that individuals with a higher abundance but lower diversity of bacteria on their skin had higher chances of becoming victim of mosquito bites.

It has further been highlighted that female mosquitoes have different strategies of finding their prey. They look for hints like heat and moisture for finding their victims. According to the research, countries grappling with malaria have higher problems of smelly feet.

It is hoped that the findings of the research would be considered while setting up strategies to fight malaria all over the world. In addition, various countries like Africa have been dealing with the heinous disease from past many years. The researchers are hopeful that their findings would prove helpful for such countries in conducting research over malaria and in establishing malaria preventive methods.
