It has been recently revealed that there has been a rise in the number of African elephants being poaches for the sake of their ivory. It was revealed that there were as many as 38,000 elephants poached each year for the sake of their precious material. If the same was to continue, there wouldn’t be any African elephants left by the year 2020.
Their expensive ivory is made into jewelry, chopsticks and trinkets and then sold at huge price tags.
There is a huge market for ivory in Asia and the East seems to b4e catching up soon. There is need for stopping this sort of smuggling otherwise the world shall soon have to count elephants in the extinct species.
There are entire herds of them being shot together and there is need for stopping this type of poaching for the selfish motives of man. It is essential that one and all understand how important elephants are, for the maintenance of the ecological balance.
One can do their part in the support drive by boycotting goods made of ivory. If people don’t buy things made of ivory, the makers will have to resort to a stop the production of the same, and they will run in loss. This shall make sure that the ivory is not hunted for and the elephants remain safe.
“What has struck me so clearly is that the same ingredients for the massacre of hundreds of thousands of elephants in the ’80s are again at the forefront”, said EIA co-founder Dave Currey, who is one of the members in the investigation team in the Blood Ivory Smugglers film.
It is essential that the buck stops here, otherwise there is soon going to be a time when people will have to show elephants to their children not in zoos, but only I the books.
