Walmart to Label Healthy Food Products

WalmartLast year, Walmart promised to come up with a variety of improvements in terms of nutritional quality of the food products it sells. Now it seems that the company has done all the needed paperwork to transform its promise into reality.

Along the same lines, Walmart on Tuesday said in a statement that it had now formulated quality standards aimed at determining what is healthy and to what extent. For making its consumers aware about the standards of food products, Walmart has decided to label the food items that abide by the majority of standards.

While expressing her opinion regarding the implementation of the newly-designed labels for food products along with mentioning what all positives it can offer for customers, the Executive Vice-President for corporate affairs at Walmart, Leslie A. Dach, said in an interview: “This is not meant to lecture our customers. They can buy a dessert when they want to. But when they want to buy a cracker, we can help them steer them to a healthier cracker if that’s what they’re looking for”.

The new label will be bright green in color and will be having inscription written on them “Great for you”. During the initial phase of the implementation of food labels, Great Value and Marketside food items of the retailer itself will be showcasing the green labels from this spring.

Along with green labels, signs for fresh vegetable and fruits will also be incorporated.

However, Walmart executives have claimed that the company has decided to permit other brands to make use of the label, free of cost without giving any kind of licensing fee on food products that clearly address the set standards and meet all the quality criteria set by Walmart.
