Criticism Rising Against Bike Helmet Harm Study

HelmetCycling with a helmet stands very important when we talk about the risks of damage that can be caused to the rider in case of any tragedy. But a new research does not conclude similar findings rather the research is criticizing the law that has made it mandatory for the cyclists to wear helmets.

Yes, findings of a recent research have been published in the New Zealand Medical Journal, which are clearly pointing against the harms that bike helmets have done till date. In the findings, it has been mentioned that compulsory wearing of cycle helmets has resulted in to 53 premature deaths in a year and has almost halved the number of cyclists in the region.

Moreover, the research has also pointed that the average number of hours that were earlier cycled by a cyclist has also reduced by 51 % (especially in 1989-90) as compared to the figures of 2006-09. Also, similar period has reported 20 % higher accident rates, the research added.

Critics of the helmet law, which was introduced in the year 1994 are strongly complaining that the experiment has certainly failed as it has done nothing more than harm.

But this is not the view of all, including a leading cycle race promoter, who has added his voice to criticism of the new research against the use of helmets while cycling.

Another statement came yesterday from New Zealand Cycle Classic Tour Director Mr. Jorge Sandoval, who said that New Zealand drivers are actually aggressive and thus it is not at all a sensible option to ride without a helmet.

"I only wear helmets because all drivers here are idiots. Unfortunately, in New Zealand, people are aggressive when they get behind the wheel”, said Mr. Sandoval.
