Breastfeeding Prevents Asthma up to Six Years

BreastfeedingWe know a good big list of all those benefits that breast feeding an infant can get. After six years of study and research, there is addition of one more in the list.

Yes, researchers have recently revealed in their findings that breast feeding an infant gives him a strong protection against developing health problems like asthma or wheezing.

Recent research has undoubtedly given some very solid proof to the researchers regarding the protective shield that is created among infants from breast feeding and protects them against diseases like asthma easily for up to six years of age.

Since many years, researchers were trying their best to end the long debate on the issue and finally researchers from Otago University have succeeded. The team ran the study over more than 1,100 infants in Christchurch and Wellington for over six years.

Researchers noted from the study that breastfeeding created a very protective effect, which stood even stronger in vulnerable infants.

Lead author of the study is Dr. Karen Silvers, who also said that the study has given very robust and convincing results regarding effects of breast feeding upon the health of the infant. In her statement, Dr. Silvers has also highlighted the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, which suggest that infants must not be introduced any food or drink other than breast feed for the first six months, as recommended by the World Health Organization.

During the study, researchers thoroughly studied about wheezing and asthma in 1105 children from Christchurch and Wellington at two, three, four, five and six years of age. They noted that breast feeding created a very strong protective effect among infants against developing asthma.

The effect was similarly stronger in atopic infants and children as well.
