It has been reported that a representatives of Victorian hospitals have asked the industrial umpires to command nurses not to conduct or go ahead with stop-work action on Friday. The nurses of Victoria have been launching attacks over the government for not paying attention to their demands.
On Thursday, the Health Minister, David Davis, turned a deaf year to the demands of the Australian Nursing Federation (ANF). Following the reaction by the Health Minister, the nurses of Royal Melbourne Hospital, Dandenong Hospital and Western Hospital decided to call stop-work action on Friday.
While saying no to the demands of the nurses, Mr. Davis said that increasing the pay of the nurses would cost the health care sector an additional expenditure of 1.7 billion a year. The health sector is already facing a grim financial situation which means that at this time the government cannot afford to increase the salary of the health workers.
But the nurses are reluctant to understand the reasons cited by the Health Minister. They want their improvement in their working environment. The nurses are made to work longer hours and also paid meagerly. The already poor working environment has aggravated the situation faced by the nurses. Because of it, they have launched a series of attack over the government by refusing to work. The ANF is yet to respond to the government about the so called strike.
Mr. Davis said that the ANF is taking the advantage of the patients admitted in the hospitals. He further said that such a move like stop-work action can have a serious impact over the health of the patients. Hospitals are already facing shortage of nurses and this particular action would no doubt leave patients distressed.
