Recently, the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE) has alleged that the Federal Government has failed in making two essential reports public. The two alleged reports are said to be about the hazardous impact of consuming alcohol during pregnancy.
The FARE has noted that the two reports must have been made public while announcing the labeling of alcohol. Last years, in December, it was decided that the labeling over the alcohol should be made compulsory so that pregnant women could be made aware of the hazards of consuming alcohol.
However, later it was decided that the concerned industries should be given a time of two years to gauge the right type of labeling system. The FARE has alleged that by withholding the two essential reports the authorities concerned have given a free kick to the industries.
The pros and cons of consuming alcohol should be made aware to the industries so that they could come up with the effective labeling system. It has been informed that one of the reports contained particular information which showed that the effect of labeling system over the drinking behavior of people is minute. It means that the labeling system isn’t effective.
However, the other report showed that labeling addressed to expecting mums have a considerable impact as it helped in preventing 77% of the spree drinking incidences among the pregnant women.
Caterina Giorgi, the FARE policy and research manager was reported as saying, “I'm extremely disappointed that the government didn't release reports that are so vital to informing the discussion on alcohol warning labels. This handed the alcohol industry a free kick and allowed many industry statements to go unchallenged”. It is hoped that after the revelation by the FARE an action would be taken by the authorities concerned.
