Nova Scotia woman detained in Dubai for aggressive behavior

A Nova Scotia woman, Nicole Stroop-Gillis, 34, was detained in Dubai, for being drunk and behaving aggressively with an airport official during a stopover in the Middle Eastern country.

On October 1, Gillis was traveling from Kandahar Airfield, where she was working as a civilian supply technician. Her destination was South Africa, where she was flying to meet her boyfriend, and in between her trip she was supposed to stop in Dubai for 15 hours. She has also been accused for showing disrespect toward a male security official during the stop.

Her mother, Sharon Gillis, wrote in an e-mail on Friday that her daughter drank a few beers once she landed in Dubai. Official charges are still pending, she said.

Since she acted quite aggressively during her stay at Dubai with the official, she was taken under arrest.

In spite of Gillis extending an offer of apology towards the official, it seems that it will take quite a few months for this issue to be resolved.

"He is the only person who can have the charges dropped or prevent the court hearing from going forward," she said in a posting on a Facebook group supporting her release.

Rodney Moore, the spokesperson of Foreign Affairs, said, "Consular officials in Dubai and Canada are actively providing consular assistance and support to the individual ... and to the individual's family."
