The possible contamination of Jalapeno pepper has forced South Florida produce Castellini Co. to continue its recall. It was earlier found that these peppers might be contaminated by Salmonella. As the company doesn’t want to take any risk, it issued a statement to recall the questionable products. During a routine checkup at a retails store, the possible presence of Salmonella was found in packs of 2-, 10- and 40-count packages.
Although there have been no cases of possible illness from these reported, the company is not taking any chances. Till date peppers from distributors in Oxford, NC; Lake Worth, FL; Washington, DC; Pompano Beach, FL; Fair Lawn, NJ and Toronto, Ontario, Canada have been recalled.
The company had also issued the lot number which could be found on the back of the packaging for all the customers who have bought the questionable products. Moreover the company has also put Leslie DiStefano, the Director of Sales and Food Safety, in charge for the ease of people to verify the receipt and help them destroy the product. This is a very worrisome situation for the customers as Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. It can also lead to fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
This incidence comes just few days after another company club chef, which is a Castellini processor, announced that as a precautionary measure it was recalling its 12- and 16-ounce and five-pound salsa products. The reason behind that recall was same as traced of Salmonella were found in their products also. Earlier it was speculated that tomatoes could be the reason behind contamination but with fresh evidence the finger is being raised at Jalapeno peppers.
