Americans Highly Aware About Bone Marrow Transplants

Bone-Marrow-TransplantsPeople in America have become more aware about the benefits of bone marrow transplant, says a recent report, which has helped Sandy Springs' Northside Hospital realize a good number of donors the previous week.

It is highly essential to encourage as many people to donate marrow, say experts, since most people in need of the same often fail to find one. The reason behind the same is unmatched bone marrows of their family members.

Nearly 90,000 to 100,000 Americans tend to suffer from terminally ill conditions each year, may it be lymphoma, leukemia or SCD. And the only most effective cure for the same is transplantation of bone marrow.

Thus, the hospital treating such patients had organized a ‘Be the Match marrow’ registry event so as to celebrate World Sickle Cell Awareness Day on June 19. Noticing a total of over 100 people arriving as donors, the hospital appreciated Robin Roberts for co-hosting “Good Morning America”.

It says that her announcement about marrow donation by her sister to her has brought a drastic change in the scenario. Around 15,000 people have registered to donate since then.

Also, Leslie Kerns, the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program’s director, said, “Through successful drives such as this one, we are raising awareness of need for more potential bone marrow donors, particularly minority donors".
