A team of researchers has proved as to how diet rich in DHA components helps sharpen the brain and enhance the memory. The team of medical researchers at University of Alberta has finally concluded a relevant explanation, which supports that DHA, an omega-fatty acid, commonly found in fish, is healthy for brain development and memory.
During the course of their study, Principal investigator Yves Sauve and his team divided lab animals into two categories, one of which was given a diet rich in DHA and the other one was subjected to a regular, but healthy diet.
Examining the animals suggested that those of who were given high levels of DHA had a rise in levels of DHA in memory section of brain called hippocampus by 30%, in comparison to the other group.
Sauve, a Researcher in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, asserted that their team was eager to know as to how DHA had a relation with the memory and hence, the study was conducted.
Sauve said, “What we discovered is that memory cells in the hippocampus could communicate better with each other and better relay messages when DHA levels in that region of the brain were higher”.
He further suggested that this was the reason as to how DHA improved memory.
