Soft Drinks Responsible for 180,000 Deaths Per Year

Soft-DrinksIt is a known fact that soft drinks are unhealthy. A study has further strengthened the fact by quoting that approximately 180,000 die every year due to fizzy drinks.

The study taken out by a group of researchers from Harvard University was presented at the Epidemiology and Prevention/Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism 2013 Scientific Sessions which was a part of the American Heart Association.

The figure is expected to cause a stir among people and it is hoped that a decline in people having soft drinks will be witnessed. A data was gathered from the 2010 Global Burden of Diseases Study and after assessing the same, the study researchers were able to find the number of deaths due to sweetened soda drinks.

It was revealed that soft drinks have caused 133,000 diabetes deaths and 44,000 deaths have taken place due to cardiovascular diseases. Not only this, 6,000 cancer deaths have also taken place due to soft drinks consumption.

"Our data really provides an impetus for policy makers to make changes when they see tens of thousands of deaths are due to this beverage consumption", said Gitanjali Singh from the Harvard School of Public Health. It is expected that changes will be soon made.
