Vitamins Given to Children, but Parents Do Not Inform Doctors

vitaminsA new study reveals that parents give multivitamins and other supplements to kids but do not disclose this information to physicians, even if there could be some relation between vitamins and other drugs.

It has been found that Vitamin C can mess up with blood thinners by delaying or increasing their effect. Some vitamins are also known to meddle with chemotherapy taken by cancer patients.

Study Leader, Dr. Ran Goldman, said that generally, Vitamin use is very safe.

“But because of the potential for interactions we think it is important that parents and doctors communicate more about this. Knowledge is power”, said Goldman, Director of Emergency Medicine at BC Children’s Hospital.

According to the study, around 600 children out of 1804 were on vitamins daily, weekly or occasionally. One-third of parents of these kids did not share this information with the doctors.

And, only 35% were taking the vitamins on a doctor’s suggestion.

Dr. Goldman insisted that doctors should inquire patients about vitamin use, and educate them on possible interactions between vitamins and other medicines.
