Dubai's Emirates Airline suffers heavy loss due to ash
Due to the ongoing volcanic ash issues, the European air travel is facing troubled times and has already cost Emirates Airline US$50 million.
The Dubai-based carrier told that it lost an income from 18,000 passengers a day since the airspace across the United Kingdom and much of Europe remained closed.
A company statement told that approximately, 30 Emirates aircraft were grounded which is equivalent to one fifth of the fleet, adding that more than 80,000 passengers had been impacted by the ongoing disruption.
Emirates Airline President Tim Clark was quoted as saying in the statement, "Like every carrier operating to Europe, Emirates is facing huge losses, US$10 million a day in our case."
The airline boss told that the level of the crisis was different from anything he had experienced in his entire career.
Clark informed that Emirates would keep on providing hotel accommodation for all passengers who were in transit in Dubai when the disruption starts.
At present, Emirates is not accepting passengers for travel to any European destinations, excluding Moscow, Athens, Larnaca, Malta and Istanbul, until April 20.
For around 6,000 passengers who were in transit, the airlines offered accommodation and three meals per day when the disruption started, at a cost of over US$1 million each day.
The customers can cancel their booking or change their onward destination without any charge that all are affected by the disruption.
While the crisis is ongoing, Emirates has given up all re-issue and cancellation fees.
