This week a legislation was introduced by Illinois Rep. Jan Schakowsky meant to tighten noose around cosmetics as many of them contain hazardous chemicals. This would also press for regular government testing of products.
Some lipsticks, shampoos, deodorants, and skin lightening creams were found to contain dangerous chemicals like mercury in extremely high amounts, which is totally banned in such products.
The proposed legislation was welcomed by Dr Lewis Kaminester, a North Palm Beach dermatologist who is president of the Palm Beach County Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery.
It was also stated that such products should be continuously tested for ensuring that they meet the standards.
He added, "The population doesn't realize that there may be more toxicity putting things on their skin than they thought. They thought things were safe. Many over-the-counter products changed some of their non-active ingredients. They don't even have to make note of it. Then a patient will have contact dermatitis."
Fluoride and aluminum chloride is often found in common and everyday use products like toothpaste and anti-perspirants but if used in large doses can prove dangerous. Sunscreens are also often found containing oxybenzone which is known to disrupt hormones.
Stricter labeling requirements were called for by Schakowsky's bill and also that the FDA is given the ability to order recalls of dangerous products.
