Solar energy used by Animal Shelter

Solar energy used by Animal ShelterIn a new step towards energy conservation, the Silicon Valley Humane Society’s new animal shelter has decided to depend upon the solar module to produce about 30-40 percent of its electricity.

The new rooftop solar system comprises of 1,335 photovoltaic modules which have a 274-kilowatt solar parking shade structure. The solar power system is owned and operated by the Tioga Energy.

The estimated saving enabled by this installation is $50,000 in energy costs. The Humane Society could get the solar technology installed with no capital outlay, due to the agreement with Tioga to buy the power from them.

Christine Benninger, the shelter’s president, said “Today, our Animal Community Center not only promotes animals, but also showcases the ease and beauty of energy efficiency, water saving, and building in harmony with nature.”

There are exquisite green features in the animal shelter. The concrete used in its building was the concrete from an existing structure. This measure also cut down the amount of new concrete which was required to be purchased for the completion of the building.
