Genetic factors are found to be associated with migraine

Genetic factors are found to be associated with migraine Researchers have found a new genetic link connected with migraine. With this discovery, researchers claim to discover new therapies to protect people against migraine pain attacks.

In order to conduct the study, scientists have looked into genetic data of over 50,000 people and arrive at the conclusion that people who have greater risk of developing migraine have a particular DNA variant on Chromosome 8 between two genes -- PGCP and MTDH /AEG-1.

Scientists also found that associated DNA variant controls the levels of glutamatem a chemical, known as a neurotransmitter, whose main feature is to transmit messages between nerve cells in the brain.

According to a `Health and Medicine' Journal, it is reported that due to accumulation of glutamate in nerve cell intersections in the brain, migraine attack initiate.

To reach the conclusion of genetic association with migraine, this is the first time that genomes of so many people have been studied, said by the leader of the research, Dr Aarno Palotie of Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.

These kinds of discoveries took place in the presence of international support and collaboration in which large amount of data is gathered and studied complimenting with experts advice and resources. With the findings of this discovery, scientists will found new path of research for many common diseases.

For the study, scientists have conducted a genome-wide association study, in which genomes variants will be studied to find out their association with migraine.

Scientists have gathered genetic data of more than 3000 patients suffering with migraine from Finland, Germany and The Netherlands and over 10,000 non- migraineurs from pre-existing studies, to find out the group that is more susceptible to migraine attacks.

Co-author Christian Kubisch of Ulm University said that die to this findings many new doors have been opened for research process and scientists are more anxious to get into the depth of these kinds of common diseases and discover its effects.
