EU dropped charges against France over Roma expulsions

EU dropped charges against France over Roma expulsionsThe infringement charges were dropped by European Commission against the France about the illegal campaign which was launched by France to expel the Bulgarian and Romanian Roma from the country.

The Commission had penalized France for not passing the legislation to conform the directive of EU’s free movement 2004 in the last week of September.

Over the France President Nicolas Sarkozy’s campaign of deporting Roma people and attacking illegal roma camps which were situated outside French Towns, Brussels and Paris were engaged in war of words. French govt. and President Sarkozy had started expelling thousands of Roma people from France to Bulgaria and Romania, which is illegal under EU law, until they prove to be a threat to French internal security.

Despite the defiant words, the French agreed to the demands of European Commission to amend the French laws to conform with Free Movement Directive in mid- October. In early 2011, draft legislation will be drawn up for passage in French Parliament. As per Viviane Reding, who is EU Justice Commissioner, the incident was a proof of the functioning of EU as Community which is governed by the law.
