Educational campaign for women to be rolled out by UAE

The United Arab Emirates' General Women's Union (GWU) has decided to educate women regarding the legislations which matter to them.

A drive "Know Your Rights," is being launched by Women's union, also a part of the implementation of the National Strategy for the Advancement of Women, which is a joint venture with the UNDP, launched some time in 2006.

The drive would educate and prepare the women in eight key areas of education, economy, media, social work, health, legislations and environment, political and executive fields.

The campaign shall be launched in October, and would make women aware of their rights guaranteed by the constitution and prepare them to fight for their legal rights.

In the first phase of the programme, 12 workshops and four training task forces shall be held.

During these workshops, training in the international conventions and laws regarding women's rights shall be imparted, and women shall be made aware of the labor and civil service laws and code of personal status.

A number of educational booklets have also been issued by GWU under this "Know Your Rights" initiative, which focuses on alimony, custody and women's rights.

Brochures on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) have been circulated.
