A German study has found that half of the doctors in the country prescribe placebos the treatment because it works by mind altering of the patient. But at the same time it raised a concern saying that placebos might not have the same effect as antidepressants in about a third of cases.
The doctors, who use placebo as a medicine, give a sugar pill to their patients to instill hope as it keeps them happy for the time being and nature follows its course for healing.
Some critics have raised serious doubts about the workability and effectiveness of this method saying that it was a question of trust. They said that how long that trust would last if the doctor regularly cheated his patients.
Explaining more about the method, experts said that if one believed that something was being done then it definitely raised spirits of patients as well as of doctors.
Doctors are conducting several trial placebos to equalize this effect and they believe that random double-blind trials are our most powerful tool in proving whether or not a new drug works.
Sharing more information about the issue, authors of the article said, “Placebos had helped 59% of patients who had been suffering from an upset stomach”.
