UAE to start listing Arabic domain names from April

As per the media reports, the month of April will see the UAE's plan to list internet addresses in Arabic language under the .emarat domain name coming true.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) confirmed, "Countries can now apply for new top level names that correspond to country name in one of its official languages."

The criteria will be evaluated by ICANN during this process before accepting the application like linguistic, technical and administrative matters.

Previous month, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the body in charge of assigning online agreed to permit the use of Arabic and many of the world's scripts.

In a meeting in Seoul, the ICANN allowed the change. The programme will be released in stages, commencing Nov. 16 and finally the use of IDNs will be extended to all types of Internet address names.

Previous week, the Egypt's communications minister declared the opening of the first Arabic domain, with registration commencing for the .misr country code top-level domain.
