Dark Chocolate Brings Calmness and Contentedness: Study
As per a new study done by researchers of Swinburne University of Technology in Australia, eating dark chocolate can increase calmness and contentedness. The study got reported in Science Alert according to which, polyphenols are found in cocoa which affects its consumer with these effects.
Researchers are of the view that the compound of polyphenols reduces oxidation stress and thus, reduces the chances of initiation of various diseases as it helps in reduction of stress, and stress is the cause of many major diseases.
Lead author of the study Matthew Pase, who is also a Ph. D. candidate in Swinburne said, "Anecdotally, chocolate is often linked to mood enhancement. This clinical trial is perhaps the first to scientifically demonstrate the positive effects of cocoa polyphenols on mood".
For the study, researchers examined 72 healthy men and women who were between the age group of 40 and 65. They were given a drink mixed with different ratios of cocoa polyphenols in it and told to drink it daily once for 30 days. The reports show that the participants who drank their drinks with higher concentration of cocoa polyphenols achieved higher levels of calmness and contentedness as compared to all other participants with lesser or no concentration.
The researchers believe that these results are commencing point that will be used to know that whether cocoa would be useful in solving the problem of anxiety and depression.
