E-commerce spending survey toped by UAE
As per the survey by MasterCard Worldwide, the highest average online shopping spend in the Asia, Middle East and Africa regions was in the UAE, with residents spending an average of $1,048 in the last quarter of 2009.
Though, the UAE residents spent somewhat below they did in Q4 2008, consumer told that they are becoming more happy with shopping on the internet, with 52% of the respondents stating that it is convenient to shop online in
2009, versus 47 percent in 2008.
Airline tickets (43 percent), books and arts (34 percent), CDs, DVDs and VCDs (30 percent) and home appliances and electronic products (29 percent) were the most popular items bought by online shoppers in the UAE.
This is in spite of a recent Kippreport survey, which declared that UAE shopping websites charge an average of 50% over their US counterparts. The Middle East consumers are also hit by extra postal charges charged by international players, for example Amazon. com.
