Emal to ramp up output to 700,000 tonnes in 2010

State-owned Emirates Aluminium (Emal) envisages to ramp up output at its giant new aluminium plant to over 700,000 tonnes by the end of fiscal 2010.

The sources said that the firm is developing what eventually will be the major single aluminium plant around the world with a capacity of 1.4 million tonnes. The plant is expected to be fully online by fiscal 2014.

The sources further added that the first phase was due to commence early next year.

Emal is a joint venture between state-owned Dubai Aluminium (Dubal) and Mubadala Development Company.

Mubadala is an investment vehicle owned by the Abu Dhabi government, which produces most of the UAE's oil. The UAE is the world's third-largest oil exporter.

The sources said that Emal was proceeding with expansion even after other global aluminium producers were forced to cut output due to the impact of the slowing economy on demand.
